Carrot cake

We’ve always got room for vegan carrot cake. (Stephen Hui)

One thing I’ve missed about living in Toronto (several years ago) is picking up the occasional slice of Sweets From the Earth vegan spiced carrot cake at Fresh on Crawford.

Apparently, I’m not the only fan of this kind of dessert. In response to customers’ requests, Edible Flours (2280 West Broadway) has started baking its own version of carrot cake in Kitsilano. The cream cheese frosting on the cake is made by adding Tofutti’s Better Than Cream Cheese to the vegan bakery’s vanilla frosting.

During a recent visit to Edible Flours, slices of the carrot cake were selling for $5 as a daily special. We took one home and weren’t disappointed.

By the way, if you’ve got a hankering for Sweets From the Earth’s carrot cake, Karmavore (610 Columbia Street) in New Westminster stocks it and other baked goods (flourless cashew cookies!) from the Toronto vegan bakery.
